September 1996 - Liege changes

Telephone numbers in Liege and vicinity changed as of 14 September 1996. The 041 (or +32 41) area code will become a 04 (or +32 4), while the 6-digit subscriber numbers will become 7-digit numbers by prefixing the digit 2 or 3 (depending on area/exchange).

Various Changes

On July 1997, the +55 24x regions (domestically, 0242, 0243, 0244, 0245, 0246, 0247 and 0248) were consolidated under +55 24 (024 domestically) with the local number expanded by the digit after the 24. Details available from TELERJ.

Numbering Authority

Telephone numbering in Canada is under the North American Numbering Plan (NANP) under authority of the federal government (Industry Canada). Area code assignments are ultimately administered by the Lockheed-Martin., formerly Bellcore.

 

2000 - New Toronto region area code

A new area code is expected to be in service in 2000 for Toronto and the surrounding region. Official announcements of the area code have yet to be made, although this has been reported in The Toronto Star.

The new area code will be an "overlay" to the existing 416 and 905 territory (i.e. the Distributed Overlay option mentioned below). Original reports indicated that the new code would be in effect for the 416 (Toronto) area. A Bell Canada contact recently advised, however, that the overlay would be for both 416 and 905 areas, and not just 416 (Toronto).

What this means is that the new code cannot conflict with existing telephone exchange prefixes (or central office codes) in 416 or 905, nor can they conflict with local calling outside 416/905, and it must obviously be an area code available for assignment. 220 appears to be the most likely candidate for the new 416/905 overlay area code; extremely few other codes fit these assumptions, and they represent special purpose exchange/central office codes.

The known early proposals for a Toronto-only (416) split included:

 

• A Municipality split, where the core Toronto area (e.g. old City of Toronto proper) would retain 416, with the rest of Metropolitan Toronto changing to a new area code. (Exchange boundaries do not match existing political boundaries, however.)
• An East/West split, where Metro Toronto is divided roughly along a Yonge Street boundary. 416 area code would be retained at the major downtown exchanges (Adelaide, Asquith, Caniff, Simcoe) and west (Etobicoke, western North York, west Toronto, City of York). A new area code would have been assigned to eastern areas (east Toronto, East York, eastern North York, Scarborough).
• A Distributed Overlay proposal, which means a new area code would have been available throughout the existing area code boundary.
• A Wireless Overlay, in which cellular, pager and other special services would have received a new area code. Traditional wireline phone services would have retained existing area codes. Variants to this approach included 1) assignment of the wireless area code throughout the existing 416 and 905 area code territory, or 2) assignment of the wireless overlay within 416 (Metro Toronto) only.

Politically, the 416 area code territory consisted of the Metro Toronto government and six component municipalities (East York (borough), Etobicoke, North York, Scarborough, Toronto, York). The Province of Ontario has eliminated the component municipalities in favour of a single government in the 416 territory, effective 1 January 1998. This action makes geographic types of splits less sensitive to municipal boundaries (e.g. Municipality or East/West types above).

25 January 1999 - Alberta area code split (403, new 780)

Telus has announced that northern Alberta, including Edmonton, Peace River and Fort McMurray will change to a new 780 area code. Southern Alberta including Calgary, Red Deer and Stettler will retain 403. The boundary line will be along an approximately east-west line, with the new 780 territory north of Red Deer and Stettler. Use of 780 becomes mandatory 12 July 1999.

13 June 1998 - Montreal area code split (514, new 450)

 

Area code 450 was announced by Bellcore in January 1997 for a split of the Montreal-area 514 area code. Montreal Island plus Ile-Bizard, Ile-Perrot, Ile-des-Soeurs and Ile-Notre-Dame will retain 514, with all other 514 exchanges changing to 450 area code.

The 450 code is to be activated 13 June 1998 for permissive dialing (either 450 or 514 can be used for numbers to be in the new 450 territory). After 16 January 1999, 450 will be mandatory for those areas outside the core Montreal islands.

Of the methods of new area code introduction analysed below, the geographically-based split was chosen. Known proposals for a Montreal region (514) split included:

 

• A geographically-based municipal split, where Montreal Island retains 514 area code, and the rest of the existing 514 territory is changed to a new area code.
• A Concentrated overlay, where numbers in a new area code are assigned throughout part of the existing 514 area code territory.
• A Distributed overlay, where numbers in a new area code are assigned throughout the existing 514 area code territory.
• A Wireless Overlay, in which cellular, pager and other special services would receive a new area code. Traditional wireline phone services would retain the existing 514 area code.

21 October 1997 - Northwest Territories/Yukon area code 867

Area code 867 now represents the Northwest Territories and the Yukon Territory. 867 replaced the use of area code 403 (used in Yukon and western Northwest Territories, code shared with Alberta) and 819 (used in the eastern Northwest Territories, code shared with Quebec).

The 867 area code began service 21 October 1997. Calls may still be placed to northern points using the 403 or 809 area code until 26 April 1998 when use of 867 becomes mandatory.

In 1999, the Northwest Territories will be split into two territories, Nunavut in the east and a western territory whose official name is not yet determined (recent reports suggest Northwest Territories name will be retained for this region). No further area code changes are planned to reflect this situation.

1996-7 - British Columbia area code split (604, new 250)

British Columbia's area code 604 was the second Canadian area code to be split in recent times. Area code 604 was reduced in territory to numbers in the Vancouver region (Lower Mainland). A new area code 250 was assigned to telephone numbers outside the Lower Mainland, including the provincial capital of Victoria.

1993 - 610 code changed to 600

610 was a Service Access Code (special area code) originally designated for Canadian TWX (telco teletype) services. TWX is now obsolete, but the 610 code was retained for use with ISDN and "datalink" services.

610 was changed to 600 on 1 October 1993. This allowed the January 1994 introduction of 610 as a new area code in the Philadelphia, U.S.A. region (the former 215 area code territory there was split).

This list of 600 assignments indicates the valid three digits that follow 600, and the carriers they are assigned to.

 

1993-4 - Central Ontario area code split (416, new 905)

The 416 area code which included central Ontario regions for many years was split so that only Metropolitan Toronto retained area code 416, while other areas were changed to the 905 area code. The split began "permissive" dialing on 4 October 1993 (i.e. 905 could now be used for calling, but use of the old 416 code was still allowed). 905 became "mandatory" as of 25 March 1994 when 416 area code could no longer be used for numbers outside Metro Toronto.
